When deciding whether or not to use an information source in your research,
you should consider the following questions:
- How current is it? Depending on the topic, the publication date can affect the usefulness of the information. For example, a book published before 1980 with a list of J.S. Bach’s organ works will not be current with new discoveries of his music manuscripts.
- Who was it written for? The general public? Scholars?
- Is there a noticeable bias? Many English-language music reference books published prior to the 1980’s have a definite British viewpoint on music and often exclude information on popular music.
- How well does it cover your topic? Is it comprehensive, an overview, or narrowly-focused?
